Repeatedly raising issue of banned Hindi book ‘Sikh Itihas’ a mischievous act: SGPC

Amritsar, March 1, 2022 (Yes Punjab News)
Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) today alerted the Sangat that some anti-Sikh forces are trying to tarnish the image of SGPC, the apex body of Sikhs and the Sikh Panth (community) should be aware of the same.

SGPC member and federation leader Bhai Gurcharan Singh Grewal and member Bhai Gurbakhsh Singh Khalsa said S. Baldev Singh Sirsa, who recently started the protest against Punjab School Education Board’s (PSEB) books misrepresenting Sikh history, is deliberately defaming the SGPC.

“The protestors including S. Baldev Singh Sirsa, Lakha Sidhana who staged a protest outside PSEB’s office and some more mischievous people, are tarnishing the image of SGPC under a well-planned conspiracy which cannot be tolerated”, said SGPC members.

They said these people are deviating from the actual issue during their protest and without any reason, they are deliberately raising the issue of Hindi book ‘Sikh Itihas’ published by the SGPC in 1999, whereas, the truth is that the SGPC had banned this book.

They said on the instructions of the SGPC President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, the case related to the said book has been reviewed, according to which, this book stands banned.

“There was some objectionable content in this book and after receiving the objections from the Sangat, it was banned”, said the SGPC members.

SGPC office-bearers clarified that a special resolution was passed by the General House Session of SGPC on November 23, 2007, which banned this book and its printed copies were withdrawn. They said this book was Hindi translation of Joseph Davey (JD) Cunningham’s book ‘History of The Sikhs’, which was published in the series of 300 books to be printed in view of third centenary of Khalsa Sajna Diwas in 1999.

Following objections, this book was banned and advertisements were published in the newspapers firstly on October 24, 2010 and then on August 11, 2018. Moreover, a case was also lodged by S. Baldev Singh Sirsa regarding this book with the Sikh Gurdwara Judicial Commission, Amritsar in 2007, which was dismissed by the court in 2013.

SGPC members said that this book was banned by the SGPC’s General House Session, which is supreme, through a resolution by admitting the mistake publically.

“Some people including S. Baldev Singh Sirsa, who often oppose SGPC, are making this an issue for their personal interests and the Sangat should be aware of the same”, said the SGPC members.

On this occasion, SGPC assistant secretary S. Kulwinder Singh Ramdas, S. Paramjit Singh and others were also present.
