A 45-year-old man facing trial in a 2020 Sri Guru Granth Sahib sacrilege case was brutally murdered at his residence in Turan village near Mandi Gobindgarh in the early hours of Monday, police said.
The deceased has been identified as Mewa Singh, son of Mohinder Singh and a resident of Turan village in Punjab’s Fatehgarh Sahib district.
Attacked Inside House
According to preliminary police information, an unidentified assailant allegedly entered Mewa Singh’s house at around 2 a.m. while he was at home with his family and launched a violent attack using a sharp-edged weapon, believed to be a sword.
Police said the assault was extremely brutal, resulting in Mewa Singh being beheaded. He died on the spot before any medical assistance could be provided.
The attacker fled the scene immediately after the incident.
Sacrilege Case Pending Since 2020
Police said Mewa Singh had been booked in October 2020 at Mandi Gobindgarh Police Station in connection with the alleged desecration of Sri Guru Granth Sahib at a gurdwara in Turan village.
Officials said the case remains pending before the court. During the course of the trial, Mewa Singh had reportedly been granted bail on two occasions.
According to local residents, he had been working as a tailor before the alleged sacrilege incident.
Senior Police Officials Reach Spot
Soon after receiving information, Station House Officer (SHO) Sandeep Singh of Mandi Gobindgarh Police Station, Amloh Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Vikramjit Singh and other senior police officers reached the village.
The body was taken into custody and sent for post-mortem examination.
Forensic experts also visited the crime scene and collected evidence as part of the investigation.
Murder Case Registered
Police have registered a case of murder against unidentified persons and launched an intensive investigation.
Officials said all possible angles, including the victim’s pending criminal case and other potential motives, are being examined. Efforts are underway to identify and arrest those responsible for the killing.
No arrests had been reported till the filing of this report.
