The Punjab Government held an extensive meeting with a delegation of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ekta Ugrahan), led by Joginder Singh Ugrahan, and assured time-bound action on farmers’ demands. The meeting was attended by Cabinet Ministers Harpal Singh Cheema, Aman Arora and Gurmeet Singh Khudian, along with senior officials from concerned departments.
Addressing the media, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said mutually agreed timelines of one to two months had been set for resolving accepted local issues. He said the government had earmarked ₹750 crore for crop damage compensation, and payments to affected farmers were underway.
On pending FIRs registered against farmers during previous agitations, Cheema said many cases had already been cancelled. For around 13 to 16 cases pending in courts, the government would pursue a phased legal process to facilitate their withdrawal.
The meeting also discussed compensation for tenant farmers and the longstanding concerns of cultivators who have farmed land for decades without formal ownership rights.
Cheema assured the union that major agrarian issues pending with the Centre would be strongly raised during the upcoming session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha. He said the state government had previously passed and forwarded resolutions opposing international agricultural trade agreements considered detrimental to farmers and the proposed Electricity Bill.
The Group of Ministers reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting farmers’ rights and livelihoods through legislative and administrative measures.
BKU (Ekta Ugrahan) representatives present included Jhanda Singh Jethuke, Shingara Singh Mann, Jagtar Singh Kalajhar, Janak Singh Bhutal, Roop Singh Sanna, Harwinder Kaur Bindu, Kamaljit Kaur and Kuldeep Kaur.
