Punjab Cabinet Minister and Malout MLA Dr Baljit Kaur has announced that work on the ₹11-crore New Chauntra Minor relining project in Sri Muktsar Sahib district will begin shortly. The project is expected to improve irrigation infrastructure and benefit around 8,000 acres of farmland across 10 villages.
Dr Baljit Kaur thanked Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and Water Resources Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal for taking forward the project, describing it as an important initiative addressing a long-standing demand of farmers in the region.
The minister made the announcement after paying obeisance at Gurdwara Sahib in Balamgarh following the Bhog of Sri Akhand Path Sahib. Local residents welcomed her and expressed gratitude for the proposed canal upgrade, saying it would strengthen irrigation facilities for farming communities.
According to Dr Baljit Kaur, the project will replace the existing brick lining of the New Chauntra Minor with durable concrete lining. The work will cover a canal stretch measuring 54,000 feet and is intended to reduce seepage, improve water conveyance efficiency and support more reliable distribution of irrigation water to agricultural fields.
The 10 villages expected to benefit are Saddarwala, Maur, Badhai, Chak Badhai, Balamgarh, Ramgarh Chunga, Janisar, Bhagsar, Chak Madrassa and Mahabhadar.
The minister said improved water delivery would help reduce wastage and ensure more timely availability of irrigation water, supporting agricultural productivity and the rural economy.
She added that the Punjab Government was working to modernise rural infrastructure and strengthen agriculture, with a focus on quality, transparency and timely implementation of development projects.
Dr Baljit Kaur reiterated the government’s commitment to farmer-focused development and sustainable management of water resources, saying efforts would continue to extend development benefits across Sri Muktsar Sahib district.
