Jatinder Singh Aulakh retired today as Chairman of the Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC), concluding his tenure from January 29, 2024, to January 3, 2025. Known for his steady leadership and practical approach, Mr. Aulakh introduced key reforms that positively impacted Punjab’s public service framework during his short but effective term.
Mr. Aulakh joined the Punjab Police in 1990 as a DSP and eventually retired as the Intelligence Chief of the state in the rank of ADGP. Over his career, he held prominent positions including Commissioner of Police Ludhiana and Amritsar, and SSP in districts like SBS Nagar, SAS Nagar, Rupnagar, and Sangrur, gaining extensive experience in law enforcement across Punjab.
Throughout his career, Mr. Aulakh earned the confidence of all three major political parties in Punjab—the Indian National Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal, and Aam Aadmi Party—during their respective tenures in government, and served in key roles under each administration, highlighting his effective and neutral approach to governance.
As PPSC Chairman, Mr. Aulakh implemented crucial reforms, including making the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) qualifying in nature, aligning it with UPSC standards. He also introduced the inclusion of Punjab’s history in the syllabus, aiming to deepen candidates’ understanding of the region.
This change is expected to level the playing field for non-engineering candidates and foster greater regional awareness. The reforms will ensure a more equitable recruitment process and better-prepared officers with a strong connection to Punjab’s heritage.
These reforms introduced earlier in his tenure, garnered widespread support and appreciation from the youth.
The PCS notification, released on his final day in office, entailed 322 posts, further reflecting his commitment to strengthening the recruitment process. During his tenure, 547 individuals were successfully recruited across various departments of Punjab, underscoring his focus on efficiency and transparency in public service.
Jatinder Singh Aulakh’s tenure at PPSC reflects a blend of solid administrative experience and a focus on practical reforms, leaving a lasting impact on both public service and law enforcement in Punjab.
