Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) held a grand ceremony to honour Hockey Olympian Jarmanpreet Singh and International Hockey Coach Shiv Sharan Singh Jagdey for their outstanding achievements in the field of sports. Jarmanpreet, who showcased exceptional skills at the Paris Olympics, and Shiv Sharan, a PAU alumnus, were felicitated by dignitaries, students, and sports enthusiasts.
Presiding over the event, PAU Vice-Chancellor Dr Satbir Singh Gosal emphasized the significance of sports and athletes as symbols of a thriving society and nation.
He expressed pride in Punjab’s contribution to the Indian contingent at the recent Olympics, which had a significant representation from the state. Dr Gosal remarked, “The presence of stalwarts like Jarmanpreet and Shiv Sharan at PAU will undoubtedly inspire our students to take a keener interest in sports.”
Registrar Dr Rishipal Singh highlighted PAU’s tradition of honouring achievers in various fields, calling it a testament to the university’s commitment to excellence. He added, “Recognizing the contributions of such icons not only celebrates their achievements but also motivates others to strive for greatness.”
Dr Nirmal Jaura, Director of Students’ Welfare, extended a warm welcome to the guests, noting that Shiv Sharan, a former PAU student, trained on the very grounds of the university, and Jarmanpreet frequently participated in hockey tournaments held at PAU during his school and college days.
He also underscored PAU’s legacy in hockey, mentioning that the university has produced three hockey Olympian captains for India.
Dr Vishwajeet Singh Hans, President of the PAU Hockey Club, spoke about Shiv Sharan Singh’s illustrious career. At the same time, Mr Ajay Pal Singh Poonia shared insights into Jarmanpreet Singh’s journey to success. Both Jarmanpreet and Shiv Sharan expressed heartfelt gratitude for the recognition.
Shiv Sharan said, “This honour from PAU, a prestigious institution, reminds us of our responsibilities and motivates us to keep striving.” The event also included a special felicitation for sports promoter Mr J.P. Singh, acknowledging his efforts in nurturing talent.
Registrar Dr Rishipal Singh concluded the event by expressing gratitude to all attendees for making the occasion memorable.
The ceremony saw enthusiastic participation from PAU officials, faculty members, and students, all united in celebrating the spirit of sportsmanship. Dr Vishal Bector coordinated the programme.
