UNITED SIKHS expresses deep concern over the condemnable incident at St. Catherine Girls High School in Faisalabad, Pakistan, where a young Sikh student, Satnam Kaur, was forcibly stripped of her turban and brutally beaten by school authorities for refusing to participate in Christian prayers.
According to her mother, Manmeet Kaur, a resident of Faisalabad and the sole breadwinner of her family, Satnam was kicked and punched in the stomach after she resisted pressure to abandon her Sikh identity. When her sister attempted to help, she was prevented by teachers who dismissed Satnam’s suffering as “pretending.”
This incident is part of a troubling pattern of harassment faced by Manmeet Kaur and her children. Despite her tireless efforts to provide education and stability for her family, she has repeatedly encountered discrimination and violence. The family’s vulnerable financial situation further compounds their hardship, leaving them without adequate protection or recourse.
UNITED SIKHS emphasizes that the turban and Kara are sacred articles of faith in Sikhism, integral to the identity and dignity of every Sikh. Any attempt to forcibly remove or prohibit them is a direct violation of the universally recognized freedom of religion and belief. It is an assault to personal identity and the fundamental rights that safeguard human dignity.
Sikh community organizations have strongly condemned the incident and demanded strict action against the school administration.
