Even as AICC Punjab affairs in-charge Bhupesh Baghel was meeting the dissident camp led by former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi in Chandigarh on Saturday, senior Congress leader and former MLA Kulbir Singh Zira posted a symbolic message on X that quickly drew attention amid the ongoing leadership tussle in the Punjab Congress.
Zira, widely regarded as a close supporter of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, shared a photograph of himself with Warring along with a message that many political observers interpreted as a show of unwavering support for the state Congress chief.
His post read:
“There are so many jackals and other animals in the forest, but there will be only one lion. And even if it is single, it will be the king of the jungle. This is not only a description but also a clear declaration.”
Although the post did not mention Raja Warring by name, its timing and the accompanying photograph led to widespread speculation that it was intended as a political message backing Warring’s leadership at a time when the Channi camp was pressing the party high command for a change in the state leadership.
The photograph shared by Zira shows Raja Warring and the former MLA engaged in a light-hearted conversation over tea, with a large painting of a tiger prominently displayed in the background—an image that further reinforced the symbolism of the accompanying message.
The post came while Bhupesh Baghel was holding a nearly 90-minute meeting with Channi and several senior Congress leaders at the residence of Rana Gurjeet Singh.
After the meeting, former Deputy Chief Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, speaking on behalf of the dissident camp, said they had conveyed to Baghel that they did not want a “compromised leader” to head the Punjab Congress and preferred someone capable of speaking fearlessly for the party. He also remarked that political decisions could change, despite the high command’s recent decision to retain Raja Warring as PPCC president.
Against this backdrop, Zira’s post has added another dimension to the internal political battle, suggesting that Warring continues to enjoy firm backing from a section of Congress leaders even as efforts continue to persuade the party leadership to revisit its decision.
While neither Raja Warring nor Kulbir Singh Zira offered any further explanation of the post, its timing ensured that it became part of the day’s political narrative in Punjab Congress.
