Mizoram Police have arrested a 24-year-old man from Manipur and seized 1.457 kg of heroin valued at approximately Rs 2.91 crore from a vehicle in Saitual district, officials said on Wednesday.
The seizure was made during a special checking operation at Kualmawi in Keifang on Tuesday night, as part of the state police’s ongoing enforcement drive against drug trafficking.
According to a senior police official, the team intercepted a white Maruti Suzuki Brezza travelling from Manipur towards Aizawl on suspicion that it was carrying illegal contraband. The driver was identified as Thangminlun Baite, a resident of Kangpokpi district in Manipur.
A detailed search of the vehicle was conducted in the presence of independent witnesses, leading to the recovery of 100 soap cases containing heroin weighing a total of 1.457 kg. The seized consignment was estimated to be worth around Rs 2.914 crore.
Baite was arrested at the spot. Further investigation is underway to establish the source of the heroin, its intended destination and the wider network involved in the alleged trafficking operation.
Mizoram and Manipur remain vulnerable to drug smuggling because of their proximity to Myanmar and the wider Golden Triangle region, which includes parts of Myanmar, Laos and Thailand and is associated with illicit narcotics production and trafficking.
Six districts of Mizoram and five districts of Manipur share a 910-km international border with Myanmar, much of which remains unfenced. The porous border and cross-border routes pose continuing challenges for security and drug enforcement agencies.
Authorities have been conducting operations to disrupt trafficking networks dealing in heroin, methamphetamine tablets and other contraband across the region.
