HC Stays Bajwa’s Arrest in ’50 Grenades’ Remark Case; Restricts Cong Leader’s Public Statements

Chandigarh, April 16, 2025 (Yes Punjab News)
The Punjab & Haryana High Court has provided relief to senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition (LoP) Partap Singh Bajwa, granting a stay on his arrest, till April 22, in connection with a case stemming from remarks he made during an interview with a private news channel. The court has also issued a notice to the State of Punjab, with the next hearing scheduled for April 22.

In addition to the stay on arrest, the High Court has directed Partap Singh Bajwa to refrain from making any public statements regarding the subject matter of the case.

Bajwa’s counsel, APS Deol, informed the media that he successfully argued against the validity of the FIR, stating that it was based solely on the observation of a lady constable and lacked proper investigation. He also asserted that the sections of law imposed were not legally sustainable.

According to APS Deol, Partap Singh Bajwa cooperated with the police investigation on Tuesday, revealing all the sources of his information during the questioning.

Meanwhile, Government Sources and the AAP claimed that Bajwa has got no relief from High Court as the Court didn’t quash the FIR and instead allowed the investigation to continue. Bajwa has been asked to cooperate in the investigation of the case, sources claimed. It was also claimed that Bajwa would have to appear before the invesstigation team as and when the police summons him. Moreover, he has been restrained from making any public statements on the matter.

While expressing gratitude to the High Court for the relief granted, Partap Singh Bajwa stated that he would refrain from making any further comments on the issue as the matter is currently sub judice.

Seeking to overturn the legal proceedings against him, Partap Singh Bajwa had approached the High Court with a petition to quash the FIR registered by the Cyber Crime Police Station, Mohali. In response, the Punjab Government and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) continue to assert that Bajwa’s statements were deliberately aimed at disseminating false information and creating a climate of fear within the populace. They argue that such actions are unbecoming of a senior Congress leader and the Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, who holds a position of significant public trust
