GNDU Athletes achieve remarkable triumph at FISU World University Games 2023

The sporting world has witnessed an extraordinary feat as athletes from Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) showcased their remarkable talents on the international stage, securing an outstanding total of 12 medals at the FISU World University Games held in Chengdu, China, from July 28 to August 8, 2023.

Chinese President Xi Jinping officially opened the 31st summer edition of the FISU World University Games on Friday July 28 in Chengdu, capital city of southwest China’s Sichuan Province. After a two-year wait, the Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games have finally commenced.

GNDU athletes left an indelible mark by securing a phenomenal 7 Gold medals, 3 Silver medals, and 2 Bronze medals, adding to the impressive tally that India garnered at the global event. This achievement has propelled India to the 7th rank in the medal tally, an impressive feat considering the nation’s previous tally of 18 medals over a span of 60 years.

The FISU World University Games, which drew participation from 10,000 athletes and officials representing 113 countries, proved to be a showcase of exceptional talent and sportsmanship. GNDU athletes not only demonstrated their exceptional skills but also embodied the spirit of dedication and perseverance that defines their institution.

The success of GNDU athletes is a true testament to their relentless efforts and the dedicated guidance of their coaches. These victories stand as an inspiration to aspiring athletes, highlighting the potential within the Indian sporting landscape.

Adding to India’s overall success, athletes from Punjab University Chandigarh clinched 2 Gold, 3 Silver, and 2 Bronze medals, showcasing their prowess on the global platform. Equally remarkable, Punjabi University Patiala athletes secured 3 Gold, 1 Silver, and 3 Bronze medals, further emphasizing the exceptional performance of Punjab-based institutions.

The Vice Chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University, Prof. Dr. Jaspal Singh Sandhu expressed immense pride in the accomplishments of their athletes and congratulated them for bringing honor to the university and the nation. The university’s commitment to fostering excellence in both academics and sports has been exemplified by this monumental achievement.
