Former union minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal today announced that either drugs would remain in Punjab or the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), adding the next SAD-BSP alliance government would go after those selling drugs to the youth immediately after the formation of the government.
“I assure my sisters that we will not victimize the youth who fall prey to the drug menace as was done by the Congress government. We will rehabilitate them in society and give them jobs. We will target the sellers. I promise you they will feel the heat. I am committed to removing the scourge of drugs from Punjab and will do my utmost to achieve this end”, Mrs Harsimrat Badal said while addressing a public gathering in favour of party Bathinda Rural candidate Parkash Singh Bhatti.
Asserting that the drug menace had increased ten-fold during the tenure of the Congress government, Mrs Badal said “Congress legislators openly colluded with drug lords to not only patronize drugs but even became equal partners and even leaders in this heinous crime against humanity”. She said it was due to this open collusion between the Congress party and the drug mafia that drugs had entered each and every ‘mohalla’ in the State. “We will end this menace once and for all”, she added.
Mrs Badal also led a blistering attack against chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi for mouthing lies. She said the chief minister was asserting that he had reduced power bills in the State. “The truth is that the Congress government has presided over a fifty per cent increase in the average power bill in the last five years. It affected a minor reduction for a two month period to deceive the people into voting it to power. Channi knows that the reduction is till March 31 this year only. He should refute this fact if it is not true”.
Speaking about the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Mrs Badal said AAP had largely given tickets to Congress turncoats and discredited persons. She said AAP had also sold a large chunk of its tickets for crores of rupees. “How can such a party claim it represents the aam aadmi?” she asked.
Referring to the call of AAP to vote for change, Mrs Badal “the only change AAP has done in your area is to give the party ticket to a former Akali – Amit Rattan who was expelled from the SAD because he had swindled farmers’ ‘. She said in direct contrast the previous SAD led government had brought in change in the lives of the people of the area by establishing the AIIMS medical facility and central university besides other prestigious projects. She said real change was the admission of a daughter of an anganwadi worker who had studied in a meritorious school established by S Parkash Singh Badal into a medical college. “We will continue to build more such institutions to ensure a bright future for your children” she told the gathering.
Mrs Badal said the next SAD-BSP alliance government was also committed to ensuring BPL women heads of families would receive a grant of Rs 2000 per month even as all domestic consumers would receive 400 units of free power per month. She also announced that five lakh houses would be given to the poor and that seventy five per cent of the ten lakh new jobs which would come up in the private sector would be reserved for Punjabis.
