Keeping in view the sentiments of the people, Rajya Sabha Member Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal expressed deep concern in the House during a Special Mention regarding incidents of desecration of religious Granths.
The issue was taken on record by the Rajya Sabha. He urged the government to enact strict and effective laws to prevent such incidents across the country, so that no one dares to disrespect sacred scriptures in the future.
He informed the House that there are no clear national statistics on such incidents in India. However, according to NCRB data, hundreds of cases related to hurting religious sentiments are reported every year.
Referring to the 2015 Bargari sacrilege case and the 1986 Nakodar sacrilege case in Punjab, Sant Seechewal said that these incidents continue to cause deep resentment within the Sikh community. He also highlighted that justice is still pending in cases where members of the Sikh community were killed in police firing during protests.
Mentioning the ongoing protest in Samana, he said that people are demanding strict legislation to curb such acts. He emphasized that religious texts are not merely books but are spiritual guides. In Sikhism, Sri Guru Granth Sahib is regarded as the living Guru.
He further stated that such incidents not only bring shame to humanity but also raise serious questions about law and order and the functioning of governments.
He strongly recommended the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to uncover the truth, ensure a fair and swift investigation, and identify those responsible, Which will identify the culprits through a fair and speedy investigation. He also stressed that the guilty must be given the strictest punishment to deliver justice and uphold the sanctity of religious traditions.
