Chandigarh Mayor Sarbjit Kaur Dhillon launches capacity building programme on Disaster Management & Epidemic Response

Smt. Sarbjit Kaur Dhillon, Mayor, Chandigarh launched a capacity building programme of sanitation workers, safai mitras and firemen on Disaster Management & Epidemic Response under SBM 2.0 in the presence of Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh at Fire Station, Sector 17, here today.

During the inaugural programme, the Mayor said that the role and responsibilities of Sanitation workers and Safai Mitras have been enlarged with the capacity building programme on disaster management and epidemic response as they are the eyes and ears of Municipal Corporation spread each and every part of city. She said that during the emergency situations, their role can save life, property and environment.

The Mayor briefed about the programme that training will be imparted to the frontline Municipal sanitation workers at 7 different locations of Chandigarh i.e. Fire Stations including Sector 17, Sector 11, Sector 38, Sector 32, Industrial area Ph-I, Industrial area Ph-II and Manimajra. She said that participants will be given training about the topics like risk analysis, prevention, preparedness, effective response to the impact of a hazard, measures related to timely and effective warnings as well as evacuation and emergency planning, role of sanitation workers, personal safety, etc.

While explaining about the programme, Ms. Anindita Mitra, IAS, Commissioner, MCC said that the initiative aims at creating a cohesive and resilient system in the face of technological or natural hazards through raising awareness and capacity on roles and responsibilities of all stakeholders in potential preparedness and response measures. She said that this will be achieved by assisting decision-makers and technical personal (frontline workers) to increase community awareness and to prepare coordinated response plans involving industry, govt. and the local community, in the event that unexpected events should endanger life, property or the environment.

During the programme at different Fire stations, the trainers held sessions on different topics including Endemic, Epidemic, Pandemic, Zoonotic diseases, causes of diseases and symptoms and prevention. Similarly, training was imparted to the sanitation workers about their role and responsibilities during the disaster/epidemic etc. Nearly 250 sanitation workers were imparted training on the disaster management and epidemic response during the 1st day of programme.

Earlier, the Mayor and Commissioner inspected the newly added equipments in the Fire & Rescue Services including inflatable light towers and hose pipes, which help the Firemen to serve the city more efficiently.
