Centre Stops Release of ‘Lawrence of Punjab’ Docu-Series Following Strong Objections

New Delhi, April 24, 2027 (Yes Punjab News)

In a significant move, the Union Government has directed streaming platform ZEE5 not to release the upcoming docu-series “Lawrence of Punjab”, which was scheduled to premiere on April 27. The decision comes after mounting concerns from political leaders, law enforcement agencies, and members of the public over the series’ potential impact.

Controversy Surrounds Series on Gangster Lawrence Bishnoi

The docu-series, reportedly based on the life and criminal trajectory of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, sparked immediate controversy after its trailer was unveiled. Critics argued that the content risked portraying organised crime in a manner that could be perceived as glorification.

Authorities and stakeholders expressed apprehension that dramatized storytelling, combined with real-life references, might inadvertently create a sense of fascination around criminal activities, particularly among younger audiences.

Punjab Government Seeks Ban Under IT Law

The Punjab Government formally approached the Centre, urging a ban on the series under Section 69A(1) of the Information Technology Act, which allows authorities to block public access to certain online content.

In an official communication, Special DGP (Cyber Crime) V. Neeraja highlighted that the series included references to serious criminal incidents, including the killing of noted Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, as well as other violent episodes linked to high-profile individuals.

The letter emphasized that such portrayals could potentially:

  • Normalize or romanticize organised crime
  • Undermine ongoing law enforcement efforts
  • Disturb public order and social harmony

Political Leaders Raise Strong Concerns

Punjab Congress President and Member of Parliament Amarinder Singh Raja Warring took a firm stand against the series. He approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court and also wrote directly to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking immediate intervention.

Warring stated that the series not only glorified an accused involved in heinous crimes but also risked tarnishing Punjab’s image by associating the state’s identity with criminal elements. He stressed that Punjab is known for its deep-rooted spiritual and cultural heritage, which should not be overshadowed by such narratives.

Family of Sidhu Moosewala Voices Opposition

Adding an emotional dimension to the controversy, Balkaur Singh Sidhu, father of the late Sidhu Moosewala, also objected to the production and release of the series. Moosewala was allegedly killed in a high-profile case linked to the Bishnoi gang, which is currently under trial.

The family’s concerns further intensified public sentiment, as many viewed the series as insensitive to victims and their families.

Public Reaction and Broader Implications

The proposed release had already triggered widespread debate across social and media platforms. Several groups argued that such content could influence impressionable minds and blur the line between storytelling and endorsement of criminal behavior.

There were also objections to the title itself, with critics claiming that linking the gangster’s identity directly to Punjab could unfairly stigmatize the state.

Government Acts to Prevent Potential Fallout

Taking into account the collective concerns, the Union Government issued an advisory to halt the streaming of the series. The move reflects a cautious approach aimed at maintaining public order and preventing any unintended social repercussions.

While the decision has been welcomed by many, it also reignites the ongoing debate around creative freedom versus social responsibility in digital content.

Series on Hold

The suspension of “Lawrence of Punjab” highlights the delicate balance between storytelling and societal impact. As digital platforms continue to expand their reach, the responsibility to present sensitive subjects with care becomes increasingly important.

For now, the series remains on hold, but the larger conversation around crime-based content and its influence is far from over.
