Dakshin Dinajpur (West Bengal), April 3, 2026
Union Minister of State Sukanta Majumdar, on Friday, put forward his apprehension on the arrest of AIMIM leader Mofakkarul Islam by the West Bengal Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for allegedly being the mastermind behind the harassment of judicial adjudication officers at Kaliachak in Malda district. Alleging Islam’s connection with the Trinamool Congress, he accused the ruling party of trying to save him.
Mofakkarul Islam was arrested at Bagdogra airport in Darjeeling district on Friday while trying to escape from the poll-bound state.
West Bengal will vote on April 23 and 29 in the two-phased Assembly election.
Union Minister Majumdar raised doubt over the hasty arrest of Islam by the CID.
“I have a doubt in the CID arresting him (Mofakkarul Islam) in a haste. Has he been genuinely arrested or whether it has been done to protect him, we will only get to know after the investigation,” he said.
He showed pictures of Mofakkarul Islam sharing the stage with Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee and of posts showing the AIMIM leader standing alongside, whom the Union Minister claimed were leaders of the ruling party.
Speaking to reporters, Union Minister Majumdar said, “Whether somebody else is behind this or not, Trinamool Congress is definitely involved.”
“I have shown you the pictures of Mofakkarul Islam standing alongside Trinamool Congress supremo and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and also with other leaders of the party. It shows how this man is connected or was connected with the Trinamool,” he asserted.
He also accused Chief Minister Banerjee of trying to consolidate votes of the Muslim community.
“By rekindling old relations and blaming the BJP, Mamata Banerjee’s plan is all about how to consolidate Muslim votes,” Union Minister Majumdar said.
About reports of Mofakkarul Islam posting on Facebook despite being in CID’s custody, the Union Minister said, “Despite being in CID’s custody if somebody goes live on Facebook, then this supports my allegation that the CID has been made to arrest Mofakkarul so that he can live peacefully. Because if NIA arrests him, their treatment will be harsh.”
Moreover, Union Minister Majumdar added, “Investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) is underway on the direction of the Chief Election Commissioner.”
On Wednesday night, when the harassment of the judicial officers took place, a person was seen addressing an agitated mob at Kaliachak, which had kept the judicial officer hostage for around seven hours.
Later, the person, seen addressing the mob and making provocative statements, was identified as Mofakkarul Islam.
An arrest warrant was issued against him, and finally, he was arrested at the airport on Friday morning.(Agency)
