Indian archers Sheetal Devi and Toman Kumar clinched gold in the compound mixed team event at the Asian Para Games in Aichi-Nagoya on Thursday, defeating Indonesia 151-148 to secure India’s first archery gold at the ongoing edition.
The Indian duo, both world bronze medallists, delivered a strong performance in the final to add another medal to India’s campaign. The victory also marked Sheetal’s second medal at the Games, following her silver in the women’s compound doubles event alongside Payal Nag.
Sheetal and Toman had already made headlines in the qualification round by setting a new world record in the mixed team category. The reigning world champions combined for 1,402 points, surpassing the previous world mark of 1,400, also held by India.
Sheetal, 18, scored 704 out of a possible 720 in the individual qualification round, matching the world record held by Türkiye’s Oznur Cure Girdi. She improved her own Asian record of 698, set in Bangkok in March, by six points and raised the Asian Para Games record from 680 to 704.
Earlier in the competition, Sheetal partnered quadruple-amputee archer Payal in the women’s compound doubles qualification. Their combined score of 1,379 established new Asian and Games records, surpassing the previous Asian mark of 1,378. Payal contributed 675 points as the Indian pair topped the rankings.
Sheetal, the defending champion in the women’s compound individual event, won gold at the 2023 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou and later secured bronze at the Paris Paralympics in 2024. She has also earned world champion status.
Toman is the world champion in the men’s compound individual category and holds the world No. 1 ranking in his classification.
