Amid Bharat Bandh, security tightened at Singhu border

New Delhi, Dec 8, 2020-
In view of the ‘Bharat Bandh’ call given by the farmers, the security at the Delhi-Haryana’s Singhu Border was beefed up on Tuesday with the deployment of additional forces of the Delhi Police, Rapid Action Force (RAF) and other security agencies.

A morning briefing of the security personnel was carried out by one Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) and one Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) rank officers.

The layers of barricading have been tightened and extended in order to maintain the law-and-order situation of the national capital region.

The traffic towards the Singhu border via the Karnal Bypass, so far, did not see any impact on the shutdown and remained as usual.

The protests by the farmers against the new agricultural laws brought in by the Central government entered their 13th day.

The farmers are protesting against the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020; Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020 and The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act 2020.

The laws allow farmers to sell their produce at places apart from their designated APMC market.

They also aim at allowing contract farming under which they can enter into supply agreements with private firms for remunerative and pre-decided prices.

However, the farmers believe that the new farm laws would pave the way for the dismantling of the minimum support price system (MSP), leaving them at the mercy of big corporates. (Agency)
