Chandigarh, November 3, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
AAP Punjab SC Wing President Gurpreet Singh GP and Chamkaur Sahib constituency in-charge Jasvir Singh Garhi on Tuesday criticised the Congress over its record on Dalit and Sikh issues, demanding justice for Dalit leader Ranjit Singh Tarkhan Majra, who was allegedly assaulted at Punjab Congress Bhawan in Chandigarh on October 27.
Addressing a press conference, Garhi said no senior Congress leader had apologised to Tarkhan Majra or publicly demanded justice despite nearly a week having passed. He questioned the Congress’s decision to hold an ‘Insaaf Rally’ in Sangrur while, according to him, failing to stand up for its own Dalit leader. Garhi said Tarkhan Majra had served the party for nearly 40 years and held several organisational and public positions.
Garhi alleged that caste-based abuses were also directed at Tarkhan Majra and claimed the assault was linked to political rivalries in Bassi Pathana involving former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and his associate Barinder Singh Dhillon. He linked the alleged motive to the 2022 Assembly election, when Channi’s brother, Dr Manohar Singh, contested as an independent candidate against the Congress. These allegations were made by Garhi.
Questioning the Chandigarh Police’s response, Garhi said a complaint had been submitted at a police station but no FIR had been registered. He alleged political pressure was delaying action. He also thanked Gurpreet Singh GP for supporting Tarkhan Majra despite their different political affiliations, saying the issue concerned the dignity of the Dalit community.
Garhi widened his criticism to Congress’s historical record, raising questions about the Poona Pact, Dr BR Ambedkar’s electoral battles against Congress-backed candidates and the delay in conferring the Bharat Ratna on him until 1990. He also questioned the party’s treatment of BSP founder Kanshi Ram, saying no national mourning was declared following his death in 2006, when Congress was in power at the Centre and in Punjab.
Addressing Rahul Gandhi, Garhi sought answers over the 1984 anti-Sikh violence, Operation Blue Star, the alleged looting of the Sikh Reference Library and human rights violations in Punjab, including enforced disappearances and illegal cremations. He also invoked human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, who exposed alleged illegal cremations and was abducted and killed by police.
Garhi announced that the AAP Punjab SC Wing would hold a protest outside Punjab Congress Bhawan on November 4 at 12 noon, when Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to attend a Congress rally in Punjab. He said the protest would demand accountability over the alleged assault on Tarkhan Majra and raise broader questions concerning the treatment of Dalits, Sikhs and minorities under Congress governments.
