Arrest by Vigilance Bureau follows multiple complaints and links to a bribery case involving a Jalandhar MC Official

In a significant development, Punjab Vigilance Bureau on Friday arrested Raman Arora, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA from Jalandhar Central, on charges of corruption. The arrest comes after extensive raids at Arora’s residence and other associated locations.
While the raids were ongoing at the time of reporting, AAP leader Sunny Ahuluwalia confirmed the arrest, reiterating the Bhagwant Mann-led government’s stance on zero tolerance towards corruption.
However, Baltej Pannu, another senior leader of the party said that the raids were still continuing. He declined to confirm the arrest of the MLA.
Sources reveal that Arora had been facing multiple complaints over time, alleging that he routinely solicited and accepted illegal gratification from the public. The case gained momentum following the recent arrest of Sukhdev Vashisht, an Assistant Town Planner (ATP) with the Jalandhar Municipal Corporation, who was caught red-handed accepting a bribe of ₹30,000.
The vigilance probe reportedly uncovered a link between the arrested ATP and MLA Raman Arora. Allegations suggest that the ATP, under Arora’s direction, issued notices to individuals involved in unauthorized constructions. Victims were allegedly pressured into settling these notices through bribes—either directly with the ATP or via the MLA.
Notably, just a week before his arrest, Raman Arora’s official security detail was withdrawn by the government. He reportedly had a security detail consisting of nearly 14 cops. It was also claimed by police officials that no security was allocated to him. Reacting to withdrawal of security Arora said that it was the prerogative of the government.
Arora visited Chandigarh and New Delhi to present his case to senior party leaders and continued political activities in his constituency.
