New Delhi, October 10, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
Around 1,000 protesters were detained across the national Capital on Saturday while travelling to join a Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led agitation against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, police said.
Security was tightened across the National Capital Region (NCR), including at border areas, as authorities moved to prevent demonstrators from reaching the protest venue at Jantar Mantar.
As part of the security measures, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) shut entry and exit gates at 45 Metro stations. Indian Railways also cancelled or rescheduled several trains scheduled to arrive in New Delhi, while Delhi Police took steps to restrict the movement of protesters towards the venue.
Police had said on Friday that permission for the CJP protest had been denied because organisers allegedly failed to comply with legal directions and undertakings given during an earlier demonstration.

Earlier on Saturday, CJP leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were detained at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport while travelling to Jantar Mantar to protest and demand the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar. The agitation concerns alleged irregularities in the conduct of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Delhi Police personnel reportedly entered the aircraft carrying Dipke after it landed at the airport. Dipke subsequently posted a video showing police entering the flight as he and the other CJP members were detained.
In the video, Dipke was heard telling the police, “…I have come here to be arrested; arrest me.”
The CJP announced the detentions through a post on its social media account, stating: “Abhijeet Dipke DETAINED! Saurav Das DETAINED! Ashutosh Ranka DETAINED!”
Social media influencer Dhruv Rathee was also detained at his residence in Gurugram. According to a post on the CJP’s X account, around 50 police personnel in plain clothes reached Rathee’s residence at approximately 8 a.m. and took him into preventive custody.
Several Opposition leaders were also detained while protesting against the CEC over alleged irregularities in the electoral-roll revision process. Those detained included Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal, party leader Gopal Rai and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The protests centred on allegations concerning the SIR exercise, while the heightened security and detentions marked a major crackdown on attempts to assemble at Jantar Mantar.
