As part of the Punjab Government’s ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’ campaign to combat drug abuse and promote a sports culture among young people, a mega Youth Run will be organised in Amritsar on October 11. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab chief spokesperson and MLA Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal has appealed to residents, particularly the youth, to participate in large numbers.
Addressing a press conference on Friday alongside AAP leader Gurpartap Singh Sandhu, Dhaliwal said the Bhagwant Mann-led government had launched the campaign with the objective of making Punjab drug-free.
He said marathons involving thousands of young participants had already been organised in Mohali, Bathinda and Jalandhar, receiving an overwhelming response from residents and youth.
Continuing the initiative, the Amritsar Youth Run will begin at 6 a.m. on October 11 from Ranjit Avenue. MLAs from Amritsar, senior AAP leaders and thousands of young people are expected to take part in the event.
Dhaliwal said promoting sports and ensuring that Punjab’s youth remained fit and healthy were among Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s key priorities.
He cited the ‘Khedan Watan Punjab Dian’ initiative, whose fourth season is underway, as another step towards strengthening the state’s sporting culture. The programme aims to identify and nurture emerging talent and help Punjab’s athletes achieve success at the international level.
The MLA also reiterated the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards drugs. He claimed that thousands of drug smugglers had been jailed under the ongoing crackdown and that action was being taken against their illegal properties and houses.
Appealing to people in Amritsar and neighbouring areas, Dhaliwal urged them to gather at Ranjit Avenue at 6 a.m. on October 11 and participate in the run.
He said the public response to similar events in Mohali, Bathinda and Jalandhar had encouraged the government to extend the initiative to Amritsar. He called on residents to join the campaign and contribute to the vision of a drug-free and ‘Rangla Punjab’.
