United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres may have discussed the imprisonment of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan with the country’s military chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, during his recent visit to Pakistan, based on remarks by his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric.
Asked whether Guterres had raised Khan’s detention with Munir and Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, Dujarric said the UN was “very well aware” of the situation surrounding the former Prime Minister and indicated that relevant issues had been discussed during the Secretary-General’s meetings with Pakistani officials.
“All of the relevant topics came up in the discussions between the Secretary-General and his Pakistani interlocutors,” Dujarric said.
Guterres met Munir during the visit at a time when thousands of Khan’s supporters were marching towards Islamabad, demanding his release and calling for the protection of democratic rights.
Dujarric also said that Guterres and Munir discussed the threat posed by terrorism. The UN Secretary-General separately met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari.
The protest march began on Sunday in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with an estimated 5,000 participants initially taking part. Describing themselves as “Imran’s Army”, the protesters were joined by additional supporters as the march progressed.
Khan, who leads the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), was removed as Prime Minister in 2022 through a parliamentary process. He was arrested in 2023 and has remained incarcerated since then.
His supporters have claimed that his health has deteriorated during his imprisonment and have continued to demand his release.
The meeting between Guterres and Pakistan’s military chief drew attention because of the prominent role the military has historically played in the country’s political affairs.
