Former India batter Suresh Raina has welcomed Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s return to the national T20I setup after the experienced pacer was named in India’s 16-member squad for the five-match series against New Zealand, beginning October 22.
Bhuvneshwar, who last represented India in a T20I in November 2022, has earned a recall to a largely unchanged squad led by Shreyas Iyer. His ability to generate swing is expected to be particularly valuable in New Zealand conditions.
The 36-year-old pacer’s return ended a lengthy wait for another opportunity at the international level and drew an enthusiastic response from Raina, who took to X to congratulate the veteran fast bowler.
“Welcome back, Bhuvi! So happy to see one of India’s finest and most skilful bowlers getting his recognition again. The discipline, hard work and resilience he has shown over the years is truly inspiring,” Raina wrote.
“From Uttar Pradesh to the IPL, and now back in the Indian T20 side, this comeback is thoroughly deserved. Keep inspiring, @BhuviOfficial. Your journey is a reminder that hard work always finds its way back,” he added.
Bhuvneshwar’s recall comes as India prepare for a New Zealand tour where conditions could suit his bowling style. The first T20I will be played on October 22, followed by four more matches in the series.
Raina’s message highlighted Bhuvneshwar’s journey from his early cricketing days in Uttar Pradesh through his IPL and international career before securing another chance with India.
Bhuvneshwar has considerable experience in the shortest format, having played 87 T20Is for India and claimed 90 wickets at an economy rate of 6.96 and an average of 23.10.
His inclusion provides another experienced option for India’s pace attack, with the selectors retaining most of the squad currently involved in the ongoing T20I series against the West Indies.
