Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday questioned the Centre’s recent administrative action against Rohingyas in the Union Territory, saying he found it difficult to understand why action was being taken against them suddenly.
Speaking to reporters in Srinagar, Abdullah distinguished between Bangladesh nationals who entered India without permission and Rohingyas who, he said, had been provided shelter in Jammu and Kashmir after being displaced from their country.
“People who have come from Bangladesh without permission, it is a different matter for them. But the Rohingyas, who are being targeted for no reason, when they were deported from their country, we gave them a place here,” he said.
“We allowed them to live here until their country’s situation improves. I find it strange to take action against them suddenly. But we do not have it in our hands. This is the Government of India,” the Chief Minister added.
His remarks came a day after 250 Bangladesh nationals found to be illegally staying in Jammu and Kashmir were taken to West Bengal in an Indian Air Force aircraft for deportation to Bangladesh.
On the issue of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), Abdullah said the Jammu and Kashmir government would not implement such legislation on its own and argued that the matter should be debated in Parliament.
“Such a legislation (UCC) should be debated and enacted by the Parliament. If you have the courage, bring a law in the Parliament. Debate it in the Parliament. See if it passes in Parliament or not,” he said.
The UCC proposes a common framework of personal laws governing matters such as marriage, divorce, adoption, inheritance and succession irrespective of religion. Article 44 of the Constitution lists the UCC among the Directive Principles of State Policy.
While supporters argue that a common civil code would promote equality and gender justice, critics have raised concerns over cultural diversity, minority rights and freedom of religion.
