INDIA bloc MPs staged a sit-in near the Election Commission of India (ECI) headquarters in New Delhi on Tuesday after police stopped their march from Parliament towards the poll panel’s office, with Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra later entering the Akashvani Bhawan premises.
The opposition MPs were stopped near the NITI Aayog office on the stretch leading towards the ECI headquarters. After being prevented from proceeding further, several leaders sat in protest and raised slogans demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with other Congress leaders and MPs, subsequently entered the Akashvani Bhawan premises in an attempt to proceed towards the ECI office, which is located nearby. The leaders later staged a sit-in under a tree on the premises.
Congress MP Pawan Khera said the Election Commission was close to the protest site but alleged that the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha was being prevented from reaching the poll panel to submit a memorandum.
“The Election Commission is barely 100 metres from here, and when the Leader of Opposition wants to go there and submit a memorandum, he is being stopped,” Khera said, questioning the manner in which the protesters were being prevented from proceeding.
The protesters marched carrying the Tricolour and banners carrying messages such as “Save Democracy” and raised slogans targeting the CEC, BJP and RSS. Security was tightened across the area, with multiple barricades put up around the ECI office and the protest route.
Rahul Gandhi had earlier climbed a police barricade and waved the national flag after the march was stopped. He and Priyanka Gandhi were also briefly detained during the protest before appearing at the Akashvani Bhawan premises.
The INDIA bloc’s protest is linked to opposition objections over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and the additional declaration attached to Form 6. The Opposition has been demanding Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation over the issue, while the Election Commission has maintained that its decisions on the SIR exercise were taken in accordance with the law and unanimously.
