A delegation of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar Surjeet) on Wednesday met Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and sought the constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct an impartial probe into allegations involving SGPC member Amarjit Singh Chawla and the developments surrounding the case at Sri Anandpur Sahib.
The delegation, comprising party Senior Vice President Karnail Singh Peer Mohammed, General Secretaries Davinder Singh Sodhi and Bhupinder Singh Shekhupur, SGPC Executive Committee Member Master Mithu Singh Kaneke and SGPC Member Jaswant Singh Padhaun, submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister.
The delegation demanded that the proposed SIT be headed by a senior, honest and impartial officer and complete its investigation within 15 days. It also sought an inquiry into the FIR registered against Chawla and the circumstances surrounding the case involving a woman who had travelled from Bahrain to Sri Anandpur Sahib.
According to the delegation, the SIT should establish who arranged air tickets for the woman and her daughter-in-law to travel from Bahrain to India and examine the circumstances of her arrival in the country.
The delegation also raised questions about the woman’s reported arrest at New Delhi airport in connection with a fraud case and her subsequent detention in Nabha Jail. It alleged that she received VIP facilities while in custody and sought an inquiry into whether she met Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) leader Bikram Singh Majithia during the period when he was also lodged there.
The delegation further sought an investigation into how the woman was taken to Bhai Bachittar Singh Niwas at Anandpur Sahib after her release from jail, including the vehicle used, the persons who accompanied her and those who remained in contact with her.
It also referred to allegations discussed in the media concerning Sarvjit Singh Jhinjer, president of the Shiromani Youth Akali Dal (Badal), allegedly arranging air tickets, helping secure the woman’s release from jail and facilitating her contact with Akali leader Virsa Singh Valtoha. The delegation said the veracity of these allegations should be established through an impartial investigation.
The memorandum also sought a probe into allegations made by the woman against Giani Malkit Singh, Additional Head Granthi of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, driver Mohan Singh and Major Singh Kaveeshar regarding allegedly inappropriate conversations and objectionable messages exchanged over the phone.
The delegation said the investigation should establish whom the woman met during her approximately eight-month stay and why she was accommodated under the management and supervision of the SGPC.
It demanded that everyone connected with the matter, from the Manager of Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib to the sewadars on duty, be questioned. It also sought an inquiry into who allegedly facilitated Chawla’s departure abroad and provided him safe passage after registration of the FIR.
The delegation said the allegations and developments had caused concern and resentment among sections of the Sikh community and raised questions about the functioning and reputation of Sikh institutions, particularly the SGPC and Sri Akal Takht Sahib.
The leaders expressed hope that Chief Minister Mann would constitute the SIT to establish the facts and ensure action against anyone found responsible in accordance with law.
