Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has rejected concerns that artificial intelligence will eliminate jobs, saying AI will automate tasks and skills while enabling people and companies to pursue more ambitious goals.
“The idea that somehow all the jobs are going to be eliminated, removed, that’s just nonsense,” Huang said during a fireside chat with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
Huang said the purpose, context and meaning of jobs would remain even as some of the skills required to perform them changed. According to him, AI would automate individual tasks rather than eliminate the broader purpose of work, effectively “supercharging” people and organisations.
He said Nvidia already uses AI extensively across its operations, combining commercially available systems with internally developed technology. Huang urged companies and countries to use off-the-shelf AI where appropriate while also investing in their own technological capabilities.
“You can’t outsource all of your intelligence to somebody else,” he said.
Huang also predicted that the world could achieve what is commonly described as artificial general intelligence (AGI) within the next few years, while noting that elements of AGI had effectively arrived already. However, he cautioned that simply connecting a company to an advanced AI service would not automatically transform its productivity.
Businesses would still need to provide AI systems with clear objectives, context, relevant information and access to the tools needed to perform useful work, he said.
Huang described the AI ecosystem as a “five-layer cake” consisting of energy, chips, infrastructure, models, and data and applications. He said countries did not necessarily need to dominate every layer but should identify strategic areas for investment and promote AI adoption across education, healthcare, manufacturing and science.
“Every single country needs to build infrastructure so that you could support your own local economy,” Huang said, describing such infrastructure as a source of digital intellectual capacity for researchers, students, industries and startups.
Huang said the US was expected to invest close to $1 trillion in AI infrastructure this year, potentially supporting economic growth and creating hundreds of thousands of jobs in semiconductor manufacturing, computer production and AI data centres.
He urged governments to balance AI safety concerns with the technology’s potential economic benefits, warning that the biggest risk for a country could be falling behind in adoption.
“The worst outcome is that you don’t take advantage of it,” he said.
Huang also argued that regulation should focus on proven risks rather than hypothetical harms.
Lutnick said countries would need to develop domestic data centres and AI infrastructure to ensure their citizens and economies benefit from the technology.
Nvidia was founded in 1993 by Huang, Chris Malachowsky and Curtis Priem. Its graphics processing units, initially associated largely with computer gaming, have since become a key component of data centres used to train and operate advanced AI systems.
