Alibaba Profit Plunges Over 75% as Heavy AI Investment Pressures Bottom Line

New Delhi, August 20, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Alibaba Group Holding Limited reported a more than 75 per cent decline in net income as the Chinese technology and e-commerce giant stepped up spending on artificial intelligence and computing infrastructure, while subdued consumer demand weighed on its traditional online retail business.

Alibaba reported a 9 per cent rise in revenue, broadly in line with market expectations, with strong demand for computing capacity from its cloud business contributing to growth. Net income, however, fell to 10.5 billion yuan ($1.6 billion).

The company also recorded a free-cash outflow of more than $6.6 billion, highlighting the financial impact of its aggressive investment in AI projects and related infrastructure.

Alibaba’s US-listed shares fell about 4 per cent in pre-market trading following the results.

The Hangzhou-based company has emerged as one of China’s major AI players, with its Qwen family of artificial intelligence models attracting growing international attention. It has committed tens of billions of dollars to AI infrastructure, including chips, data centres and AI agents, as it seeks to compete with leading US companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic.

The expansion is putting pressure on margins as consumer spending in China remains subdued. Alibaba’s core e-commerce operations continue to operate in a challenging environment, increasing the importance of its cloud and AI businesses as potential long-term growth drivers.

Under Chief Executive Officer Eddie Wu, Alibaba has accelerated its strategic shift towards AI. The company has brought most of its AI research and product teams together under Alibaba Token Hub, a new business unit directly overseen by Wu.

As part of a broader restructuring, Alibaba has also been divesting non-core assets. Earlier this month, it disposed of its gaming unit Lingxi Games.

Alibaba’s AI strategy has made it one of China’s biggest corporate investors in AI infrastructure. Wu has indicated that the company is willing to prioritise long-term AI expansion over near-term profitability.

The company’s investment could exceed its previously announced three-year spending plan of 380 billion yuan. Alibaba is also targeting a fivefold increase in cloud and AI revenue to $100 billion over five years.
