Two oil tankers were struck by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, suffering minor damage, while all crew members remained safe, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).
In two advisories issued on Friday, UKMTO said military authorities had reported that the vessels were hit by UAVs while making their outbound transit through the strategic waterway.
Both tankers sustained minor damage, the advisories said. There were no reported injuries among the crew and no environmental impact was reported.
The incidents occurred amid heightened regional tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and through which a significant volume of global energy supplies is transported.
The reports followed separate attacks involving two vessels belonging to Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) of the United Arab Emirates while they were transiting the strait on Thursday evening.
The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned what it described as Iranian attacks and called on Tehran to halt such actions. ADNOC confirmed that there were no injuries and that the situation had been brought under control, according to the official Emirates News Agency.
No further details were immediately available regarding the identity of the two vessels involved in the ADNOC-related incidents or the extent of damage they sustained.
ADNOC, the UAE’s state-owned oil and gas company, is among the world’s largest energy producers and plays a central role in the country’s economy.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters said on Thursday that commercial vessels and oil tankers would not be able to safely pass through the Strait of Hormuz without permission and supervision from the Iranian armed forces.
In a video message carried by Iranian media, headquarters spokesman Ebrahim Zolfaghari claimed that Iran retained full control and management of the strait and dismissed US assertions that vessels could pass through it normally.
The latest incidents add to concerns over maritime security and the potential disruption of shipping through one of the world’s most strategically important energy routes.
