No desire to be CM; will live and die as a Congressman only: Raja Warring

Muktsar, August 3, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The Congress on Monday accused Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of attempting to disrupt programmes being organised across the state under its ‘Har Booth, Congress Mazboot’ campaign.

Addressing a gathering in Muktsar, AICC general secretary in-charge Bhupesh Baghel and Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring alleged that attempts were being made to create disturbances at Congress events after the party started receiving an overwhelming response from people.

Baghel claimed that no such incidents took place during the first day of the campaign programmes in Fatehgarh Sahib and Mohali, but alleged that the government began sending people to disrupt the gatherings after witnessing the public response.

He praised Warring’s leadership, saying Congress leader Rahul Gandhi handed over the responsibility of the Punjab unit to him at a time when the party’s strength had declined from 80 Assembly seats to 18. Baghel said Warring had faced challenges both from outside and within the party.

Claiming that the Congress was poised for a comeback in Punjab, Baghel said people outside the state also believed that the party’s revival would begin from Punjab. He accused the AAP government of creating a “mafia raj” and pushing the state into debt, asserting that only Congress could provide an alternative government.

Baghel said the Congress was fighting multiple political opponents, including the BJP, Shiromani Akali Dal, AAP and Waris Punjab De, along with what he described as “sleeping cells” within the party. He added that those who had betrayed the organisation could not be spared.

Warring, speaking in his hometown, delivered an emotional address and recalled the difficult period when he took charge of the Punjab Congress after the party’s electoral decline.

“Everyone is after my life. Akalis, BJP and the broom and even some of our own are after me,” Warring said, adding that his only responsibility had been to rebuild the party after it fell from 80 to 18 seats.

Expressing gratitude to the people of Gidderbaha for electing him, Warring said the constituency stood by him at a crucial time when several senior leaders, including former chief ministers, had faced defeat.

He said he had worked to rebuild the party from the grassroots level when the morale of workers was low. Warring claimed that while former Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh had helped the party win eight seats as state president, he had led Congress to seven victories as PCC chief despite difficult circumstances.

Reaffirming his loyalty to the Congress, Warring said he had no ambition of becoming Chief Minister and would remain committed to the party.

“I have no desire to be the Chief Minister. I will better retire than leave the Congress,” he said, adding that he would never compromise with the BJP.

Warring claimed that Congress was making a strong comeback in Punjab and said the political influence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had declined. He alleged that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had lost the confidence of the people of Punjab.
