The Punjab Vidhan Sabha on Monday unanimously passed a resolution moved by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, seeking accountability from the Union Government over examination-related controversies, paper leaks and alleged institutional failures affecting students and job aspirants.
Moving the resolution during the Monsoon Session of the Assembly, Cheema said repeated examination irregularities had impacted the future of millions of young people and called for reforms in the country’s testing system.
Cheema alleged that corruption and paper leaks in major examinations, including NEET, had damaged the confidence of students. He said the resolution demanded restructuring of examination bodies, strict action against those involved in paper leak networks and withdrawal of cases registered against peaceful student protesters.
The minister also criticised the Centre’s handling of student demonstrations, alleging that peaceful protests had been met with force instead of addressing grievances.
Comparing Punjab’s employment record with the situation at the national level, Cheema said the Bhagwant Mann-led state government had provided nearly 70,000 government jobs purely on merit and had restored SC scholarships to support students from disadvantaged sections.
He said the resolution would be sent to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, Union Ministry of Education and the Prime Minister’s Office to formally place the concerns raised in the Assembly before the Centre.
Supporting the resolution, Cabinet Ministers Dr Balbir Singh and Aman Arora, along with MLAs Gurpreet Singh Banawali, Narinder Kaur Bharaj, Dr Nachhatar Pal, Gurinder Singh Garry Warring, Amritpal Singh and Sukhanand, also addressed the House.
