Lovely Professional University (LPU) joined the nationwide launch of the 100-week “Nasha Mukta Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyaan – Gen Z Against Addiction” campaign on Saturday, with more than 5,000 students, National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers and faculty members taking the Nasha Mukti Pledge in support of a drug-free India.
The campaign, launched virtually by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and spearheaded by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, witnessed participation from over one crore youth at more than 28,000 locations across the country. LPU was among only nine universities selected to participate in the Prime Minister’s live virtual interaction during the national launch.
Addressing the youth, Prime Minister Modi described young Indians as the driving force behind the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 and cautioned against the devastating impact of drug addiction on individuals, families and society. Stressing the importance of youth participation, he urged young people to lead the nationwide movement against substance abuse while reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening awareness, prevention, enforcement and rehabilitation initiatives.
LPU Founder Chancellor and Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Ashok Kumar Mittal said educational institutions have a crucial role in shaping responsible citizens and building a stronger nation. Reaffirming the university’s commitment to a drug-free campus, he called upon students to actively support the national campaign and encourage their peers to stay away from substance abuse.
Coinciding with Friendship Day, Dr. Mittal urged students to make the Prime Minister their “friend” in the nationwide movement and resolve to become ambassadors of a healthy, responsible and addiction-free India.
As part of the programme, students staged nukkad nataks, cultural performances and awareness presentations highlighting the harmful consequences of drug abuse on individuals, families and communities. The performances reinforced the campaign’s central message of “Gen Z Against Addiction” and encouraged young people to make informed life choices.
The university highlighted its ongoing efforts to promote a drug-free environment through a strict zero-tolerance policy towards drugs and alcohol, supported by round-the-clock campus security and regular awareness programmes.
Beyond the campus, LPU’s NSS volunteers continue to organise anti-drug awareness drives in nearby villages through rallies, street plays, interactive sessions and community outreach initiatives aimed at educating the public about the dangers of substance abuse.
