More than 5.9 crore income tax returns (ITRs) were filed for Assessment Year (AY) 2026-27 by the July 31 deadline, the Income Tax Department said on Saturday, thanking taxpayers for completing their filings on time.
In a post on social media platform X, the department said the response reflected taxpayers’ confidence and timely compliance with tax regulations.
The filing activity saw a sharp rise in the final days before the deadline, with more than 40 lakh returns submitted on July 31 alone as individuals and entities not required to undergo tax audit completed their filings.
The number of filed returns increased steadily through July. The department had earlier reported that over 1.7 crore ITRs were filed by July 11, which crossed 3 crore by July 22. The figure surpassed 4 crore on July 27 and crossed the 5-crore mark before the July 31 deadline.
The Income Tax Department had repeatedly advised taxpayers to avoid last-minute filing and complete the process well ahead of the due date to prevent possible difficulties caused by technical issues or increased traffic on the e-filing portal.
For AY 2026-27, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) introduced revised ITR forms with updated disclosure requirements. The changes include additional reporting provisions related to long-term capital gains, losses from share buybacks and certain trading transactions, aimed at improving transparency in tax reporting.
The latest filing numbers come amid the continued expansion of India’s direct tax system. During FY 2024-25, more than 9 crore taxpayers filed income tax returns, while the Income Tax Department issued refunds exceeding Rs 4.35 lakh crore.
