‘Speak Up India’ emerged as biggest digital protest: Congress

New Delhi, May 28, 2020-

The ‘Speak Up India’ campaign, launched by the Congress to highlight the Central government’s “gross failure” in tackling the problems amid the Covid-19 induced lockdown, has seen 57 lakh people post live videos, which have reached up to 10 crore people, as per party estimates, a Congress leader said on Thursday.

General Secretary, Organisation, K.C. Venugopal said: “‘Speak Up India’ emerged as the biggest and most robust digital protest movement in the country.”

The Congress said the Central government has failed in addressing the problems faced by the country’s migrant workers, farmers, daily wage earners, traders, and small entrepreneurs

It also claimed that hashtag #SpeakUpIndia has topped global trends on Twitter and Facebook.

According to the feedback received at the party’s social media department, over 57 lakh people have posted live videos, which has reached up to 10 crore people.

“The popularity of the campaign and the support received from the people are explicit from these statistics. Through this campaign, the party raised the concerns of the problems of migrant workers, farmers and the daily wage earners,” said Venugopal in a statement.

The Congress demanded that the government implement the scheme of direct cash transfer of Rs 7,500 into the bank accounts of the common people for the next six months, and take immediate steps to deposit Rs 10,000, provide free transportation service to the migrant workers and increasing the number of working days under the rural job guarantee scheme to 200.

Venugopal said that the ‘Speak Up India’ campaign registered a strong protest against the “indifferent attitude” of the government towards these demands.  (Agency)
