A total of 15 youths who were arrested following the cases registered against the Sangat sitting on protest on the Harike Bridge, were released with the efforts of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). Notably, these people were arrested during the arrests of youths by Punjab police in March month.
The SGPC was asked to take action in this regard during the gathering of Panthic (community’s) organizations held by Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib Giani Harpreet Singh on March 27, 2023. The youths released with the SGPC efforts today reached Amritsar at the SGPC office to thank the SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami, who were honoured with Siropaos (robe of honours).
On this occasion, Harjinder Singh Dhami assured the youths that the Sikh body SGPC is and will remain committed to helping and supporting against any injustice done to the Sikhs. He said that the government should refrain from creating an atmosphere of fear in Punjab and cancel the cases registered in the recent past against youths in Punjab.
Harjinder Singh Dhami said that a legal panel was formed by the SGPC under the leadership of Advocate Bhagwant Singh Sialka, while at the same time, a committee was also formed by the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib under the leadership of former Jathedar Bhai Jasbir Singh Rode. He said both the committees worked jointly to pursue the cases of youths, as a result of which 15 youths arrested in the Harike Bridge case have been released.
On this occasion, former Jathedar Bhai Jasbir Singh Rode said that the Punjab government should seriously reconsider the cases registered in the recent past against every youth because time demands it. Meanwhile, Advocate Bhagwant Singh Sialka said that in the Harike Bridge case, the police had registered 2 separate cases, in which 15 youths were arrested.
He said that the cases were registered against youths under Sections 307, 353, 186, 332, 341, 283, 431, 188, 148, 149, 120B, 427, 201 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 8B of the National Highway Act. He said that out of 15 released youths, the case on 9 youths have been dismissed, while 6 have come out on bail.
On this occasion, former Jathedar Bhai Jasbir Singh Rode, SGPC executive member Paramjit Singh Khalsa, SGPC members Advocate Bhagwant Singh Sialka and Baba Charanjit Singh Jassowal, SGPC secretaries Partap Singh and Balwinder Singh Kahlwan, and Baba Satnam Singh Valian were present.
