The Youth Akali Dal (YAD) today held a candle march at all district headquarters in the State to commemorate the martyrdom day of Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh and also paid homage to the 300 farmers who have laid down their life as part of the ongoing Kisan Andolan.
YAD members while taking out a candle march with portraits of the great Shaheed, also held placards with name of farmers who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the rights of the farming community.
YAD President Parambans Singh Romana led the candle march at Faridkot even as similar marches were held across the State with youth participating in them in large numbers.
The YAD President said while Shaheed Bhagat Singh had sacrificed his life for the country and sounded the bugle which eventually led to freedom of the country, the farmers who had sacrificed their lives in the Kisan Andolan were fighting for the rights of farmers against corporate houses who wanted to enslave them just as the British had done in the past.
Mr Parambans Romana said just as in the past Punjab had witnessed the Pagri Sambhal Jatta movement against the anti-farmer laws known as the the Punjab Colonisation Act (Amendment) 1906 and administrative orders increasing water rate charges, now the State was witnessing a popular movement against the three Agricultural laws which were aimed at ending assured government purchase of food grains under the minimum support price (msp) regime.
He said farmers who had been martyred in the Kisan Andolan had made the ultimate sacrifice for the community as well as the country. “Their sacrifice will be remembered just as we remember the sacrifice of Bhagat Singh including the latter’s Uncle Ajit Singh who led the Pagri Sambhal Jatta movement”.
The candle march evoked a huge response at all district headquarters with citizens coming forward to join the YAD volunteers to express their solidarity with the Kisan Andolan as well as its martyrs.
