World Sikh Parliament condemns Oasis Community Learning’s Anti-Sikh Curriculum, Dismisses apology as insincere

London, March 22, 2024 (Yes Punjab News)

The World Sikh Parliament (WSP) vehemently condemns the recent revelation of anti-Sikh content being disseminated in educational materials by Oasis Community Learning; a multi-school trust operating across the United Kingdom.

The insertion of a slide equating Sikh Youth UK with extremist groups like the Taliban and Ku Klux Klan is not only deeply offensive but also dangerously misleading.

The half-hearted apology by Oasis Community Learning lacks sincerity and fails to outline concrete steps for improvement.

Sikh Youth UK is a respected organization within the Sikh community, known for its commendable efforts in providing support networks and grassroots engagement.

To juxtapose them with entities notorious for heinous acts of violence is not only absurd but also extremely damaging to the integrity of the Sikh identity.

The comparison made by Oasis Community Learning is not only factually inaccurate but also perpetuates detrimental misrepresentation of Sikh individuals and organizations.

Moreover, in light of recent evidence revealing transnational anti-Sikh repression orchestrated by the Indian government, educational institutions must exercise caution and thorough diligence in their curriculum content.

The targeting of Sikh organizations by state actors should not be overlooked or trivialized.

Furthermore, the timing of this revelation is particularly concerning, given the recent redefinition of “extremism” by the UK government.

This definition’s vague and ambiguous nature leaves room for improper interpretation, which could be exploited to target specific groups unjustly.

As a political organization committed to justice, equality, and solidarity, WSP calls on Oasis Community Learning to implement mandatory cultural sensitivity training for all staff, ensure diverse representation in curriculum development, and engage with affected communities to rectify the harm caused.

Additionally, we urge the UK government to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter to ensure accountability and prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.

In solidarity with the UK Sikh community, WSP reaffirms its commitment to combating prejudice, promoting understanding, and defending the rights of all marginalized groups.
