Navjot Singh Sidhu, the cricketer turned politician, Congress MLA and former Punjab Minister has courted a new controversy by wearing a shawl with ੴ and a Khanda embroidered on it.
The matter which started generating heat on social media has now reached Akal Takht & Acting Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh has asked Sidhu to apologise.
It may be recalled that during his visit to some villages in Jalandhar, Sidhu had worn a shawl with ੴ and Khanda embroidered on it. Some images of Sidhu sporting the ‘controversial’ shawl were posted by Sidhu himself on his social media accounts. He also posted a video where he is seen meeting and interacting with people in a village wearing the shawl.
People have been reacting sharply on Sidhu’s shawl criticizing him for wearing a shawl which according to them goes against the tenets of Sikhism.
Reacting to the situation, one Paramjit Singh Akali and some other Sikhs have approached Akal Takht and sought action against him. Paramjit Singh Akali has filed a written complaint in this respect.
Acknowledging the complaint Giani Harpreet Singh, the Acting Jathedar of Akal Takht, today issued a statement asking Sidhu to apologise.
The Akal Takht Acting Jathedar said Complaints have been received from Paramjit Singh Akali and ‘Sikh Sangat’ against Congress MLA Navjot Singh Sidhu. Sidhu’s action of sporting a shawl with ੴ and ‘Khanda’ is highly unfortunate. As a Sikh, he should know that it is against the ‘Sikh Maryada’. Every Sikh has been hurt by his action. Condemning Sidhu’s action, the Jathedar said Sidhu should seek an apology from ‘Sikh Jagat’.
