Dr Aseem Verma, Senior Scientist (FMPE) at the Department of Farm Machinery and Power Engineering (FMPE), Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), has been selected to undertake advanced training at prestigious Cornell University, Ithaca, USA.
The visiting professor will work at the AgRobotics Lab of the Department of Biological and Environmental Engineering (BEE), College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell. Cornell University is an Ivy League institution in the USA and is ranked among the top 20 universities in the world.
According to Dr Manjeet Singh, Dean, College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology, PAU, the lab led by Dr Manoj Karkee works on advanced AI-based farm machinery, agricultural robots, and smart systems for autonomous crop monitoring and precision farming.
The main goals are to use resources more efficiently and reduce labour needs, he added. This aligns closely with the ongoing work of the Department of Farm Machinery and Power Engineering at PAU, which has already developed and tested a wide range of conservation, precision, and sensor-based machinery and established advanced facilities, including a precision agriculture lab, spraying technology lab, and harvesting technology lab, he said.
“Training at Cornell University will give Dr Verma an exposure to state-of-the-art technologies in the field. These technologies can be integrated into PAU’s precision agriculture and machinery research programmes.
Such solutions may be adapted for Punjab’s small and medium farms and are highly relevant to key issues in the state’s agriculture, including labour shortage, increasing costs, and environmental concerns,” he observed.
Interactions with Cornell faculty are also expected to support long-term collaboration between PAU and Cornell through joint projects, student exchange programmes, and co-supervised research in AI and farm robotics, he said.
Dr Satbir Singh Gosal, Vice-Chancellor, PAU and Dr Manjeet Singh, Dean of COAET, congratulated Dr Verma for this rare distinction and big achievement.
