SAD urges Amarinder to rush food to poorest of poor: Majithia

Chandigarh, March 26, 2020 (Yes Punjab New)

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today urged chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh to intervene urgently to rush food to the poorest of the poor, saying the State was witnessing heart rendering scenes of women pleading for food for their hungry children.

In a statement here, former minister Bikram Singh Majithia said the situation had become such that the poor were claiming that they might not fall to Caronovirus but would definitely fall prey to hunger. “It is difficult to see such suffering.

I am sure like us the chief minister also must be extremely disturbed. While the entire rural poor are affected, daily wagers who are unable to earn their livelihood are in utter despair. The government must step to ensure food stuff reaches their door at the earliest”.

The SAD leader said he understood that this was an immense task and that the cooperation of the civil society was also required to make it successful. He said a number of social and welfare organisations were keen to assist the government but were unable to engage in any relief work due to the ongoing curfew.

“I urge the chief minister to take the help of all well meaning people and form committees for this purpose under the supervision of the various district administrations. These committees should be tasked with the task of ensuring food reaches the doorstep of the poorest of the poor”.

Mr Majithia said the SAD was also ready to assist the government in this task. “Today we must all unite as one irrespective of our political affiliations. Today is not the day to engage in blame games. We should set aside all our differences and work with complete devotion to ensure much needed food stuff reaches our disadvantaged brethren. May no child in Punjab sleep hungry. I appeal to the SAD cadre to assist the State government to the best of their ability in this noble task”.
