Senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Parambans Singh Romana today said the party would wholeheartedly support the November 10 joint protest against the central notification seeking to change the fundamental character of Panjab University and not allow the conspiracy to take it under central control to succeed at any cost.
Mr Parambans Romana, who interacted with agitating students in the University campus, said the notification sought to make the University Syndicate and the Senate rubber stamps of the central government by removing the Graduate constituency and diluting Punjab’s hold on the premier institute. Describing this as an attack on the State’s identity, Mr Romana said “it is also an attempt to muzzle the voice of Punjab”.
Student leaders while speaking on the occasion urged the SAD to lead the fight against the notification being a regional party. Mr Romana said SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal would also visit the University even as he assured that youth workers of the party from both the Youth Akali Dal and the Students Organization of India would assist agitating students in their fight for justice on this issue. “We are committed to safeguarding the interests of Punjab and will take this fight to its logical conclusion”, he added.
The SAD leader also spoke on how the BJP – RSS agenda was being implemented in the University. He said all Professors and Principals were being appointed as per this agenda and what was to be taught to students in more than 200 colleges in Punjab was also being decided by the BJP- RSS.
Mr Romana also spoke on how Punjab’s rights were being snatched by the centre.
He said recently the central government had diluted Punjab’s control over the Bhakra Beas Management Board by deciding to appoint two whole time members from Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh to its Board. “Now by ending elections in the Syndicate and turning the Senate into a body of nominated and ex-officio members the centre has taken direct control over the Panjab University which is part of the heritage of Punjab”.
Mr Romana also congratulated YAD leaders including Chetan Choudhary for forcing the Panjab University authorities to take back a controversial order which required students to give an affidavit stating they would not protest on campus.
