Actor-comedian Sacha Baron Cohen has recalled the time he was asked to leave Wimbledon while dressed as his iconic character Ali G, after allegedly offering cigarettes to children.
Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Cohen revisited the incident and jokingly defended his character before admitting that Ali G was indeed selling drugs, pointing to a jacket bearing the words “Official Ganja Dealer”.
Fallon introduced the incident by telling Cohen, “You went to Wimbledon as Ali G and you were asked to leave Wimbledon That’s right as Ali G. This is real. Let’s take a look at what happened.”
The show then played a video clip in which a security staff member could be seen asking Cohen to leave the premises as he appeared to offer cigarettes and drugs to children. Responding in character, Ali G said, “I ain’t a kiddie fiddler, what was I offering. No, that ain’t true we ain’t got no drugs that was him”
Laughing, Fallon asked Cohen how he managed to get into such unusual situations, adding, “I Don’t know how you do it. I don’t know how you always get all this crazy trouble, but I mean you weren’t offering drugs.”
Cohen initially defended his character, saying, “That’s not what Ali G. Is not about drugs or anything illegal. He would never do that. He would never do that No.”
Fallon then revealed that he had a photograph of Cohen dressed as Ali G at Wimbledon, wearing a jacket with “official ganja dealer” written on it.
Acknowledging the detail, Cohen responded, “Okay, yeah So yeah, yeah, he was selling drugs..”
Cohen first played Ali G in the 2002 British comedy film Ali G Indahouse, directed by Mark Mylod. The film was the first feature-length production based on characters from Da Ali G Show, followed by projects featuring Borat and Bruno, including Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.
Unlike several of Cohen’s other character-led films, Ali G Indahouse follows a fictional narrative rather than using a mockumentary format.
The character is set to return in Ali G: Who Iz I?, which marks Cohen’s feature directorial debut. The film is scheduled for release in October 2026.
