In a shocking incident that has sent shockwaves through Punjab’s Malwa region, Sanjay Verma, a well-known garment businessman and co-owner of the popular ‘New Wear Well’ showroom, was shot dead in broad daylight near his shop at Bhagat Singh Chowk on Circular Road, Abohar.
The fatal attack occurred around 11:00 AM on Monday, moments after Verma arrived at his store. Eyewitnesses reported that two to three armed assailants, who had apparently been lying in wait, opened fire as he stepped out of his car. Verma died on the spot, while the attackers managed to flee the scene.
According to sources, the attackers arrived on a motorcycle, which they abandoned at the crime scene before escaping on another bike they forcefully snatched from a bystander nearby.
Verma and his elder brother, Jagat Verma, jointly managed the ‘New Wear Well’ showroom—well-regarded for its exclusive tailoring services, particularly for kurta pajamas, and patronized by many local dignitaries and political figures.
Jagat, who was undergoing medical treatment in Mohali at the time, told the media that the family had not received any threats or ransom demands prior to the incident.
Top police officials, including Fazilka SSP Gurmeet Singh, visited the crime scene and have initiated a detailed investigation, examining CCTV footage from nearby shops to identify the culprits.
The brazen attack has left the local community in fear. Nearby shopkeepers downed their shutters and joined in calls for swift justice and immediate arrest of the perpetrators. The incident has raised fresh concerns about the law and order situation in the region.
