Actor Rajesh Kumar believes his latest series, Matargashti, offers a relatable portrayal of middle-class families, where parental expectations are often driven by concern for their children rather than conservatism.
The actor, who plays Prakash in the series, said its straightforward storytelling, familiar characters and heartfelt father-daughter relationship have resonated with viewers. The show premiered on Netflix on October 21 and has received an encouraging response.
Describing his character, Rajesh said Prakash represents a significant section of middle-class society, particularly parents whose hopes for their children are shaped by their desire to protect and guide them.
“I would define Prakash as someone who represents almost 90 per cent of middle-class people,” he said, explaining that the character’s outlook comes from a place of care and concern. “Prakash is not conservative, but he is concerned. His intentions come from a place of care. For me, Prakash is a reflection of our society.”
Rajesh said he was pleasantly surprised by the audience response, noting that the reception of a project is not always predictable during filming. He described the appreciation for Matargashti and its popularity on Netflix as overwhelming.
According to the actor, the series stands out because of its simplicity and the authenticity of its performances. He praised Adrija Roy and Soumya Uniyal for bringing recognisable experiences and perspectives to their characters, adding that the story’s emotional core lies in the bond between a father and daughter.
Playing a father to a daughter also gave the role a personal dimension. Rajesh said he sometimes misses not having a daughter, but stressed that his approach to parenting his two sons has never been shaped by gender.
“A child is a child, and children are our responsibility,” he said, adding that parents must care for their children irrespective of whether they have a son or a daughter.
He also praised Adrija’s performance, describing her as an artist who understands the nuances of acting and noting that her training as a dancer lends naturalness to her expressions.
