Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab senior leader and Leader of Opposition(LoP) Harpal Singh Cheema on Wednesday said that the recent rains had deflated the false claims of development by Capt. Amarinder Singh and the Badals during their 10-year long regime.
In a statement issued from party headquarters on Wednesday, Harpal Singh Cheema said: “Just a few days ago, Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh had claimed to have spent Rs 50 crore to take on the fury of rains ahead of the onset of the season. Will Capt Amarinder Singh tell the people where the money had been spent?”
Cheema said that every year ahead of the monsoon, crores of rupees were spent in the name of cleaning of drainage and strengthening river embankments, adding that due to the rampant corruption, from top to bottom, these had been only on the paper, demanding a judicial probe into the matter.
Taking a swipe at the previous Badal government, Cheema said: “Bibi Harsimrat Kaur Badal and Sukhbir Singh Badal have been indulging in rhetoric to make Bathinda as the Paris and Punjab as California of India, which were dashed off in a single day.
The first downpour has turned Abohar, Sri Muktsar Sahib, Fazilka, Mansa, Patiala, Nabha, and Bathinda, as the Venice, adding “Venice is a city in Europe where roads are replaced by rivers and boats are pressed into service to ferry the public”
Cheema said peoples’ homes and shops were flooded with sewage, with the contaminated drinking tap water posed a risk of water-borne diseases, adding that thousands of acres of crops had been submerged in the rain water in various parts of Punjab.
He demanded that the government should order immediate ‘girdavari’ to access the extent of crop loss and grant full compensation to the affected farmers immediately and the work to rectify drainage should start on a war footing.
Cheema said that Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal should tender his apology, at least to the people of his the constituency Bathinda for peddling false promises and claims among them before assuming power in 2017and later backtracking on them, who had sent to him (Manpreet Badal) to the Punjab Assembly.
