Dr. Vikramjit Singh Sahney, Rajya Sabha MP from Punjab and Vice Chairman of the National Apprenticeship Council, has strongly urged multinational corporations (MNCs) and industries in Punjab to actively provide apprenticeship opportunities to youth.
In a written reply to his question in Parliament, Dr. Sahney received concerning data about the low internship numbers in Punjab., Dr. Sahney informed that Punjab has received only 742 internship offers, which is extremely low considering its population size.
Even more concerning is the low enrollment rate, with only 2,534 youth registering for the program. This reflects both a lack of awareness about the scheme and insufficient participation from industries, which must be urgently addressed.
Dr. Sahney stated that with the government extending financial support, it is the duty of both MNCs and Punjab’s industrial sector to take on apprentices, provide them with hands-on training, and create employment opportunities,” said Dr. Sahney.
Taking proactive steps to bridge the gap, Dr. Sahney announced that he is writing to all Deputy Commissioners (DCs) in Punjab to maximize youth enrollment under this scheme. Awareness campaigns must be conducted at the district level to ensure more students register.
