Punjab Health Department suspends 3 officials for negligence in treatment of an accident victim

Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh condemns incident that happened at Civil Hospital, Ludhiana

Punjab Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh today said that the department has suspended three officials posted at the local Civil Hospital, who were found guilty of negligence during treatment of an accident victim.

Condemning the entire incident during his visit at Civil Hospital here, the Minister said that zero-tolerance would be adopted against any kind of negligence on the part of health officials during treatment of patients and stern action would be taken against those found guilty.

Reiterating commitment to providing top class healthcare services across all government institutions, Dr. Singh said that Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann led Punjab government has been laying special emphasis on Secondary Healthcare establishments including District Hospitals, Sub Divisional Hospitals, and Community Health Centers.

He was accompanied by MLAs Ashok Parashar Pappi, Daljeet Singh Grewal, Madan Lal Bagga, ADC (General) Gautam Jain, SDM Dr Harjinder Singh, Civil Surgeon Dr Hatinder Kaur, besides, several others.

He further mentioned that Ludhiana Civil Hospital soon would have a new Intensive Care Unit with life support system as part of this drive to boost healthcare infrastructure at district hospitals, adding that the government was all set to fill as many as 1800 vacant posts to tackle manpower shortage at government hospitals. These posts include doctors, nurses, and other paramedic staff so that patients get best of the services at government hospitals, he added.

The minister mentioned that an earlier shortage of specialist doctors was also sorted out in Ludhiana by appointing new doctors for the district. Replying to a query about the shortage of a few medicines, Dr. Singh said that, earlier, these medicines were supplied by the Central government, but they had suspended the supply, following which the state government had to float tenders and follow other processes to procure these medicines, which has now been completed and medicines are disbursed amongst all the hospitals to ensure that there is no dearth of medicines.

Later, the Minister held a comprehensive meeting with the officials of district administration and health department wherein he asked the officials to prepare a standard operating procedure (SOP) for government hospitals which would be implemented across all the government hospitals to prevent such incidents in future.

Meanwhile, he also interacted with the general public and took their valuable feedback to further improve healthcare services at the Civil Hospital besides issuing on the spot directions to officials concerned.
