First Punjab Gangster Transferred Outside State
Chandigarh, March 23, 2025 (Yes Punjab News)
Notorious gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, who is facing multiple criminal charges, has been shifted from Punjab’s Bathinda Central Jail to Silchar Jail in Assam in a high-security operation. This marks the first time a gangster from Punjab has been transferred to a distant jail outside the state.
High-Security Transfer from Bathinda to Silchar
On Saturday night, Bhagwanpuria was taken from Bathinda Central Jail, transported to Chandigarh Airport, and then flown to Assam under tight security arrangements. This move comes amid growing concerns about gang activities inside Punjab prisons.
128 Cases and Drug Charges Under PIT NDPS Act
Bhagwanpuria is implicated in 128 criminal cases, including those related to murder, extortion, and drug trafficking. He is also facing charges under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT NDPS) Act. He will likely be questioned by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in Silchar Jail regarding his involvement in drug syndicates.
Previous Transfers of Radical Leaders to Assam
This is not the first instance of detainees from Punjab being moved to Assam. Previously, radical Sikh leader Amritpal Singh, the Khadoor Sahib MP, along with nine of his aides, were booked under the National Security Act (NSA) and transferred to Dibrugarh Jail in Assam.
However, seven out of the ten detainees have now been brought back to Punjab, with Punjab Police securing their custody in connection with the attack on Ajnala Police Station.
The transfer of Jaggu Bhagwanpuria underscores the authorities’ intensified efforts to dismantle organized crime networks operating from Punjab’s prisons.
