The Punjab Vidhan Sabha on Thursday paid heartfelt homage to Sanjay Verma, a respected garment businessman from Abohar, who was recently shot dead outside his showroom New Wear Well in a broad daylight incident claimed by the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.
Initially, the House had convened to pay tribute to former Union Minister and Akali leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, AAP Tarn Taran MLA Dr. Kashmir Singh Sohal, and Padma Shri awardee and literary icon Dr. Rattan Singh Jaggi, all of whom passed away in recent weeks.
During the proceedings, AAP Punjab President Aman Arora urged the Speaker to also include an obituary reference for the 260 lives lost in the tragic Ahmedabad plane crash. The request was accepted, and the victims were formally honored.
Following this, Balluana MLA Amandeep Singh Goldy Musafir proposed that the House also pay respects to Sanjay Verma, whose brutal murder had shocked the region. The Speaker permitted the inclusion, acknowledging the growing concern over gang-related violence in Punjab.
In a display of unity and respect, members of the Assembly stood together and observed two minutes of silence to honor all the deceased individuals mentioned.
The tribute reflected the Assembly’s commitment to remembering not only prominent leaders and public figures but also everyday citizens whose lives were tragically lost. It was a moment of collective mourning and resolve to uphold justice and peace.
The Speaker adjourned the House thereafter until Friday morning. The Punjab Government has convened a special two-day session of the Vidhan Sabha to introduce stringent legislation against sacrilege offenders and to address the growing drug menace in the state.
